Real Estate Accountant

The Role

icona is looking for an experienced Real Estate Accountant to join icona’s growing team. 

Our ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, and a resourceful problem solver with 3+ years of real estate development or construction accounting experience. Reporting to the VP Finance, you’ll oversee our financial planning, ensuring the accuracy of our financial information, preparing financial reports, maintaining our general ledger, and optimizing our business with data-driven recommendations. 

You’d be a great fit if you have a meticulous attention to detail, an analytical mind, and a relentless focus on operational effectiveness. You’ll be responsible for keeping our financial records organized and ensuring that all accounts are reconciled correctly. You have a successful track record of providing accurate and timely financial information and have the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with the leadership team to keep them apprised of the financial picture.

What You’ll Do 

• Prepare journal entries and accruals for review by the VP Finance; reconcile accounts, prepare trial balances, maintain general ledgers and chart of accounts
• Assist with month end close process; balance sheet reconciliations; adjusting entries
• Prepare quarterly consolidation file and consolidated financial statements
• Compile financial reports for internal and external use; assist with implementing and maintaining internal financial controls and procedures; assist in answering internal and external questions related to accounts and procedures
• Assist the VP Finance in the preparation of the quarterly forecasts and annual budgets 
• Responsible for monthly and quarterly financial reporting, including monitoring and analysis of operating results against budget and forecast, and providing senior management commentary
• Ensure standardization and compliance of accounting policies and procedures and work to continually improve processes and procedures
• Prepare ad-hoc financial reports and analysis as required
• Ensure compliance with federal and provincial sales tax reporting, sales tax accounts reconciliations, and sales tax management
• Assist the real estate development team, or other accountants, with other accounting duties as needed
• Assist with the implementation of Yardi Voyager, our new ERP system
• Other responsibilities as required

What We’re Looking For

• You have an associate’s degree in accounting, or business, or related field is preferred 
• You have a CPA designation with at least 3 years of experience in accounting with progressive, increasing scope and responsibility
• You have a background in real estate development, construction or related industry and are familiar with construction accounting concepts, tax strategies, and industry best practices
• You are proficient with Microsoft Office, Excel, and accounting software, particularly Yardi Voyager
• You are exceptionally organized, analytical, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills
• You have experience managing staff, are a team player and work well independently 
• You thrive in a dynamic environment and readily accept ad hoc accounting duties as needed in our fast-growing company
